Sustainable tech 4 Good – Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace
Technological innovation can be a force for both lowering and increasing the damage to nature. We need to make sure that we use it as a sustainable driver of economic growth, pushing ahead with new technologies which create the prosperity and know-how to keep the earth healthy. But, doing so in a sustainable way, extending the lifecycle of redundant tech, while reducing carbon emissions and the use of raw materials.
Redundant tech can no longer be discarded, but must be repaired and reused in a new life elsewhere. What is old in one application is an upgrade to someone else.
If we are to make a real change in reducing carbon emissions and the need for extraction of more scarce raw materials, we must all adopt circular economy business models, refurbishing and reusing tech – our planet’s future depends on such action.
At least 80% of the devices we receive are able to be repaired and reused

62 million tons of electronic waste every year is thrown away, worldwide
A record 62 million tonnes (Mt) of e-waste was produced in 2022, Up 82% from 2010; On track to rise another 32%, to 82 million tonnes, in 2030; Billions of dollars worth of strategically-valuable resources squandered, dumped; Just 1% of rare earth element demand is met by e-waste recycling
The 62 million tonnes of e-waste generated in 2022 would fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, roughly enough trucks to form a bumper-to-bumper line encircling the equator, according to the report from ITU and UNITAR.
The longer tech is in use, the lighter its impact on the earth and when it genuinely reaches the end of its useful life, the materials contained within it must be recycled and reused, and #LeaveNoTrace.

The world’s generation of electronic waste is rising five times faster than documented e-waste recycling
Meanwhile, less than one quarter (22.3%) of 2022’s e-waste mass was documented as having been properly collected and recycled in that year, leaving US$ 62 billion worth of recoverable natural resources unaccounted for and increasing pollution risks to communities worldwide.
We are expert at refurbishing tech and giving it a new life by redeploying to those in need. At least 80% of the devices we receive are able to be repaired and reused. Any devices that are end of life are used for spares and, as a last resort, the material components are recycled ensuring that no devices end up in landfill and we #LeaveNoTrace.

How is our e-waste handled?
We partner with an ethical local waste management firm, Waste Mission (Alchemy Metals), who manage any tech waste that we absolutely cannot reuse. Waste Mission offer a comprehensive waste management process, and are local to us in Stevenage, meaning that we are reducing harmful effects on the environment from unnecessary transportation of waste. We support a sustainable local independent business, who like us adopt a circular economy business model.
Waste Mission handle all of our e-waste on-site, with 0% going to landfill. You can find details of all the services they provide and their various accreditations, as well as a link to their company brochure on their website here #LeaveNoTrace.
